Read moreDiablo 4 has a fetch quest in the Scosglen region called Stolen Artifice, in which an NPC named Merryn sends you out from Braestaig to retrieve an item from a thief called Darcel. It’s a runic charm that was being used to help an ailing mother and child recover, until Darcel and his thugs stole it. The jerks.
This is supposed to be a typical sidequest, nothing too major, but players were finding it unusually hard. Instead of having to fight one Darcel, they were encountering dozens of Darcel doppelgangers. Though some managed to figure out which one was the original and kill him to complete the quest, others were forced to retreat and return, sometimes finding that hundreds of Darcels had spawned in their absence.
While some players put forward a theory that the issue was a …
Read moreExtraction shooter Escape from Tarkov dropped a big new update this week, bringing a new urban area, new weapons, a new boss, and a rework of the shoreline area. The big new region is Ground Zero, a major downtown filled with skyscrapers that also includes urban infrastructure like “banks, cafes, restaurants, stores, pharmacies, and so on.”
Catering directly to the firearm enthusiasts that make up its core fanbase, Tarkov also included a nice new weapon to tinker with. Alongside other additions is the SIG MCX SPEAR, a more widely-available “civilian” version of the US Army’s new XM7 assault rifle.
Oh, and the update adds Vaulting. Everyone who plays Tarkov is very excited about being able to defeat their greatest enemy: Some boxes and/or a thigh-high wall.
And, wow, if…
Read moreNintendo Direct showcases offer more for PC gamers than merely the grim spectacle of having to watch as the lingering hopes of Hollow Knight fans are dashed for another year. While first party Nintendo stuff stays locked in Mario’s walled garden, we reliably get reveals for third-party games that also hit PC—particularly, we see a lot of long-awaited remasters and remakes of JRPGs, and this year’s summer showcase from Nintendo continued that trend. Here’s what we can look forward to from this June’s Nintendo Direct.
Fantasian Neo Dimension
Watch On
Fantasian Neo Dimension is an “enhanced version” of an Apple Arcade RPG from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and famed composer Nobuo Uematsu. Hard to glean many specifics from the JRPG melodrama in the Direct tra…
Read moreHalf-Life has a long-lasting and healthy modding community, enjoying countless fan-made campaigns and even a complete remake—2020’s Black Mesa—which originally started out as a passion project in 2004.
Next to reinvent the low-poly wheel is Codename: Loop, a roguelike remix of Valve’s 1998 classic. Developed by Daniel Almenara (Pinky_GameDev on Twitter), the game promises to take you through an “ever-changing loop” of Black Mesa, complete with new enemies and weapons.
The gameplay I’ve seen so far seems promising, with a fully-functional weapon select wheel and dopamine-inducing damage numbers, both of which I have a weakness for.
The Into-the-Gungeon style reimagining has a few key quality-of-life features to bridge the awkward gap between third pers…
Read moreLast month, Larian announced that it’s going to “move away from D&D”, and suddenly the future of Baldur’s Gate seemed a lot murkier. The smash success of Baldur’s Gate 3 has firmly revived the classic RPG series, but without Larian to continue to shepherd it, what can we actually expect from any possible sequels or spin-offs?
It’s a question Hasbro, owner of Wizards of the Coast and by extension D&D, is in the process of figuring out an answer to. Following yet more success for Baldur’s Gate 3 at the BAFTA awards, I talked to Eugene Evans, senior vice president of Digital Strategy and Licensing for Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, about where the series goes from here. The good news is, a sequel is very much on the cards—but the company is still exploring its options…
Read moreDiablo 4’s hardest bosses have a new threat and, surprisingly, it’s not a barbarian with a giant hammer. It’s the free robot spider pet that everyone thought was useless before Blizzard dropped an emergency patch to help level it up. Now it’s crushing endgame bosses for billions of damage, and tomorrow it’s going to do even more.
Before season 3 launched, Blizzard said the Seneschal companion scales one-to-one with your character’s stats and can’t die. But when the Season of the Construct began, the Governing and Tuning Stones that give it skills took forever to level up. Players wrote the little guy off as scrap metal until Blizzard pumped the drop rates for the stones significantly. Now with max-level skills, players are finding ways to scale its damage up high enough to farm bo…
Read moreA Highland Song, the next game from 80 Days and Heaven’s Vault studio Inkle, was announced last year as a side-scrolling platformer “with rhythm and survival elements.” At the time it was listed only as “coming soon,” but now we’ve got a proper release date, and it’s close: Inkle will set its latest narrative-heavy tale free on Steam on December 5.
The new project struck me as something a little unusual when it was announced. It follows the adventures of a teenager named Moira who’s invited to visit her uncle, who lives in a lighthouse off the rugged Scottish coast, and while that sounds like an Inkle idea alright it’s also a survival platformer with rhythm game bits. That sounds like a far cry from the studio’s usual pure narrative experiences, but the press release accompanying …
Read moreEnglish is a quirky language, but what they’ve done with the title for the new hobbit game can’t be blamed on zany grammar rules. It’s a sin that’s been committed in the name of branding—a terrible sin.
The full title of Wētā Workshop’s upcoming cozy hobbit life sim is: “Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of The Rings Game.”
The crime is so heinous that the unconscious mind sometimes edits it out, so here’s that last bit again: “A The Lord of The Rings Game.”
I admit that writers are prone to indulging in theatrically strong opinions about language that other people are correct not to give a crap about, and yeah, I have at times taken pleasure in being pointlessly dogmatic about the meaning of the word “comprise.” I considered that reacting to this felony a…
Read moreHere’s your big surprise for the day: During the Warner Bros. Discovery Q4 financial call today, CEO David Zaslav revealed that Mortal Kombat 12 is on the way, and might even be out this year.
The completely unexpected reveal came as Zaslav gushed over the success of Hogwarts Legacy, which Warner said sold more than 12 million copies in just two weeks, generating $850 million in revenues.
“And there’s lot more to come, including the highly anticipated Mortal Kombat 12 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, games also set for release this year, with ambitious launch projections,” Zaslav said.
Mortal Kombat 12 was teased in January 2022, but as far as I know this is the first mention of the game in official channels. Assuming it’s being developed by Netherrealm, the…
Read moreDiscord’s experimental new Clips feature, which has been rolling out since last year, lets users who are streaming in a voice channel capture up to two-minute-long clips of their streams. It’s a nice little feature addition that has accidentally become mildly controversial.
The fear is privacy. On social media, some posters have sounded the alarm over Clips’ ability to record the voices of the other users in a channel aside from the streamer, urging their followers to opt out in Discord’s settings—there’s a toggle which omits your voice from Clips. Multiple Facebook posts I’ve seen declare that Discord now records your voice without your knowledge, and one said they couldn’t think of any legitimate use for the feature.
Actually, Discord clearly notifies the users in a …
Read moreNewegg, one of our go-to online retailers for acquiring PC components, has decided to integrate ChatGPT into several of its online features. Not only has it gone into the company’s customer service chatbot, and into optimising search, but we’re now seeing ChatGPT being used as an official AI PC building tool.
I was over here preparing to redact my position that you shouldn’t trust an AI with vital PC building questions, but I’m not so sure I can stretch to a full backtrack just yet.
According to the press release, this newfangled AI PC build generator “helps customers discover compatible parts so they can build a desktop PC system with their preferred specifications and budget.”
Alrighty, we thought. Let’s put it to the test. It seems our jobs as tech journalists…
Read moreEarlier this year, spooky-cute roguelite Cult of the Lamb got a free expansion called Relics of the Old Faith adding more to do after defeating the final boss, a heavy attack for each weapon type, relics to collect, extra challenge modes, shielded enemies, and more. Developers Massive Monster said it wasn’t the end, however, with another update still to come.
Now the studio has announced the update’s name and release window. It’s called Sins of the Flesh, and, as the official Twitter account tweeted, “Coming very early next year, this update is packed with new features, stories, and more!”
Seeing that the official art depicts cultists wearing nothing beyond carefully placed leaves like they’re in the Garden of Eden or Baldur’s Gate 3 with the nudity toggled off, player…
Read moreIt’s a display tech kind of day, so let’s round things out with our third monitor-related missive, this time involving Samsung’s new megascreen the Odyssey Neo G9 G95NC.
Samsung is showing the display off at the Gamescom in Germany and it’s an absolute monster measuring 57 inches diagonally and sporting dual-4K native resolution. Samsung mentioned the screen in passing back at CES, but now you can actually order the thing, in some territories at least.
That dual-4K res makes for a pixel density of 140DPI and thus what we are talking about here is a pair of 32-inch 4K panels fused together. That’s 7,680 by 2,160 pixels. Ouch. You’ll be wanting a fairly hefty GPU, then.
That’s especially true if you want to get anywhere near the panel’s 240Hz refresh rate in modern games…
Read moreIt looks like The Elder Scrolls 6 won’t be releasing until 2026 at the very earliest, and our PlayStation pals are likely going to be missing out entirely.
That’s according to documents that have emerged from the ongoing case between Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission over the former’s attempt to acquire Activision Blizzard, which have been shared by The Verge. It looks to be a presentation, with the slide in question being titled “Microsoft’s approach following acquisitions since 2018”. It includes a handful of Bethesda’s games that have been released since 2014, their available platforms and quotes pulled from various interviews regarding exclusivity.
The entry for The Elder Scrolls 6 has its release date as “TBC, but expected 2026 or later,” and the entry for avai…
